Optimizing Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems for Fluctuating Production Volumes: A Simulation-Based Multi-Objective Approach

In today’s global and volatile market, manufacturing enterprises are subjected to intense competition, increasingly shortened product lifecycles increased customization tailoring while being pressured maintain a high degree of cost-efficiency. As consequence, production organizations required introduce more new models variants into existing setups, leading frequent ramp-up ramp-down scenarios when transitioning from an outgoing one. order cope with such as challenge, the setup systems needs shift towards reconfigurable (RMS), making capable changing its function capacity according customer demand. Consequently, this study presents simulation-based multi-objective optimization approach for system re-configuration multi-part flow lines scalable capacities, which addresses assignment tasks workstations buffer allocation simultaneously maximizing throughput minimizing total fluctuating volumes. To extent, results demonstrate benefits that decision-makers could gain, particularly they face trade-off decisions inherent industry by adopting SMO approach.
